“Before you get a dog, you can’t quite imagine what living with one might be like; afterward, you can’t imagine living any other way.”

Why a Great Pyrenees is the perfect puppy for your family

Great Pyrenees dogs are known for being gentle, patient, and protective. Here are some reasons why Great Pyrenees are so amazing:

  • Guardians

Great Pyrenees are natural guardians bred to protect their flocks at night. They are very protective of their families, especially children, and will respond if they think their family is being attacked. In our experience, our dogs have fended off all predators for our homestead animals, and they even keep the birds away from my garden! Where we live, there are: wolves, bear, coyotes, big cats, raccoons, and all of the usual varmints. Our dogs keep them all away. We have had zero predator issues since we got our first Great Pyrenees. They work incredibly well with large livestock too, we just don’t have those yet.

  • Intelligent

Great Pyrenees are intelligent dogs bred to make their own decisions, which can sometimes make them stubborn. They are very quick to assess any threat. I always have peace of mind when my kids are outside with the dogs by their side.

  • Agile

Great Pyrenees are large dogs that are surprisingly agile and sure-footed. They have good body awareness and can easily navigate obstacles and environmental impediments. Their breed was originally sheep herders in the Pyrenees mountains. Their paws have extra dew-claws that give them the stability they need to navigate rocky mountain sides.

  • Good with children

Great Pyrenees get along great with children, and are very protective, but they should be supervised around very young children because of their size and strength. We got our first Great Pyrenees when our youngest was one year old, and our GP was very gentle with her. The only concern with little kids is the sheer size of the dogs, they can knock down small kids. But we have never experienced any aggression towards our kids, no matter how much our kids drive the dogs crazy. A very good breed for families.

  • Socializable

When well-trained and socialized, Great Pyrenees get along well with other dogs, especially smaller, well-trained, and socialized dogs. Our dogs have met numerous other dogs and there has never been any noted aggression. They usually just want to have another friend to play with.
